Avalon Report!
ORC volunteer Mike McLellan will report here about Avalon's training week-to-week. Getting a wild Bald Eagle to trust and accept her handler is a slow process, requiring much patience. This is her story.

NEW! Guest video by Kate Laird below right
I was pleased to welcome some of Avalon's friends who are part of the 'Eagle Cam Addicts' group who sponsor and monitor the nests at Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands as part of the IWS.org program to view another training session with Avalon today. The group took photos and video, and the result is the great guest video by Kate Laird you can view right here.

Video on Avalon page
Last week was Avalon's birthday (Hatch Day!) and she turned two years old! See Birthday video on Avalon page.
April Fools Day! It was another brisk but sunny day out at the ‘farm’ last Sunday. Avalon was waiting as usual and today Tawny came along to film, so Avalon was not quite as chatty as before. It was an easy step-up and she was ready to go, notice how quickly she settled in. I thought that was nice, also, you can’t tell but she’s using much less grip pressure on my arm, so it’s more comfortable too.

We stood around for awhile doing the ‘calm and quiet’ routine, then I walked around the aviary some and that really got her attention. She started to lean really close to my face and head, had me a little concerned, but she was cool. This is what we’ll be doing more of now This is what we’ll be doing more of now during the glove sessions, moving around and practicing ‘doing’ things. First I need to walk her near and around...continued here

What's New at ORC?

It's Baby Season at ORC!
This is the time of year that we start to receive nestling raptors and all kinds of songbirds as well. It's a very busy time for us as there is a lot of hand feeding involved!

Check out this short video below of a baby Great Horned Owl who fell from the nest. This baby will be cared for by experienced volunteers at ORC until ready for release back into the wild when full grown.

Ravens!
ORC received 6 Raven eggs on March 30th from a nest on a power pole that shorted out the electricity to the neighborhood. CA Edison transported the whole nest to ORC Volunteer Tawny Mclellan, who placed them into an incubator. On April 15th three of the eggs started "pipping" and small holes became evident in the shells. The first two "sawed" their way out of the shell on April 16th, and the third finished hatching the next day on the 17th. Here's a video of the minutes right after the first emerged completely from the shell. See pic of Ravens 3 days old below.

Update!
Barn Owl Nest Cam
4/19/2012 - The Owls Of Ojai have unfortunately, not been able to produce a chick so far this season. After laying 2 eggs, it turns out they are not viable. We'll keep an eye out, as the pair might try again. If that happens we will put the cam back up.
ORC volunteers, Mike & Tawny McLellan have an owl box in their backyard in Ojai, CA with a pair of Barn Owls, known as the 'Owls Of Ojai', preparing for spring babies. The first egg arrived March 26th. Barn Owls typically lay 4-7 eggs, but sometimes more. Join us as we watch with this LIVE Barn Owl box cam feed.
